ART

In art class we are making a writing of the Our Father, a comic strip of a story in the Bible, we are making a Canada poster. For the Our Father we have to take a big piece of paper and we will have a different Our Father under it, then we have to copy it on the page that’s on top of it. When it’s done you have to decorate it. For the comic strip you have to pick a story in the Bible and make it into a comic for example if you did the story on Noah’s Ark then you would have to take the key parts and make it into a comic, so when God told Noah to make the Ark, you would make it look like that’s what is being said in the comic. For the Canada poster you have to draw pictures that symbolizes Canada, for example maple leaf, polar bears, CN tower etc.

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we just finished a unit. We had our test on January 13. We studied about human rights, globalization, industrialization and many other subjects. We also made a country in a group and made a city by ourselves. I found the subjects we have been learning about to be interesting.
We are learning a new subject. The subject we are currently learning about is Canadian Democracy. So far, I found this subject to be interesting. I learned many things about this subject. I also had many questions that haven’t been answered. We also received an assignment to do. It’s going to be on capital cities of provinces and territories, naming their drainage basins, ecozones, and naming their Absolute Location. Absolute Location is the exact location using lines of longitude and latitude.

What we are Learning in Math

In math we are learning about patterns. We are learning about expressions. We learned about the different parts of an expression. An expression is any single number or variable, or a combination of operations involving numbers and variables. The variable is a letter that represents an unknown number. The numerical coefficient is the number that multiplies the variable. The constant is a number that doesn’t change and it increases or decreases the value of the expression.

In mental math we are learning many different strategies to make math easier. So far we have learned strategies for addition. The addition strategies that we learned are, count on, add from the left, breaking up numbers, and add on then subtract. We just finished learning about subtraction strategies. The subtraction strategies that we learned are, subtracting from the left and subtracting in parts. We are now starting to learn some multiplication strategies.

ICT science: Forces and Structures:

In science class, we are learning about different forces and structures as a new unit. We started watching videos of construction of really tall buildings. The video we were watching was about the building of the shanghai world financial center in China. It was a building that was for offices, apartments, hotels, and restaurants, and this building was just under 500 meters tall, and had a circle constructed at the top, but was later changed to a trapezoid. Also, when it was constructed, every 12 floors, there was a safe floor area for people to stay in case of a fire, or any other problem.                                                                                                                                                                                                                When workers started constructing the building, they had to make sure it would be firmly stuck on the ground to prevent it from swerving side to side in case of a windy storm, so they had to add supports. The workers had to first install giant metal rods in the ground connected to the building to keep it stand strait and to put concrete with metal rods lying within the structure. The top trapezoid was to let wind through so it would resist moving, and also for the decoration.  In science class we are about to do a project on one big structure and do research on it, and I am very excited for it.

Christmas Charities

Christmas is fun. But have you ever wondered what it was like not having it? We did a Christmas in October for our kid sponsor Oscar… and some other kids I don’t remember. See what I’m talking about? A lot of kids in South Africa don’t celebrate Christmas because they don’t have sponsors or they just can’t afford it.  Others are either sick or have no homes. It’s not just there… there are kids stuck in homeless shelters or sick in the hospital in North America. This inspired a lot of people to create charities all around the world. It’s just not money you can donate, there are toys you may want to get rid of that you can donate, gifts rapped by you and food that canned. Others do draws for gifts you can win and the money you used to be in the draw is donated to what foundation the company is raising for.  I know that sometimes we get a little pissed of that we don’t get what we want. I mean I do who doesn’t. But Christmas is not just for receiving but also for giving back. So donate for next year… or don’t I ain’t yo daddy. But seriously donate…

Social Studies
In Social Studies we’re doing a city project. We have to make a motto and flag for our city as part of the project. We also have to make a map of the city with a legend so that we can tell what the map is and where things are. Another thing we have to do is make a chart showing the percentage of land use. For example let’s say houses made up half of the city, you would say that residential areas made 50% of the city. The last thing we have to do is a few paragraphs about why we chose the percentages and how we will improve our quality of life. This is what we have to do in our city project.

Today my blog post is about a book I read called “A Tale Dark and Grimm” This story is about a boy and girl named Hansel and Gretel who run away from home. They run away because they think their parents don’t love them anymore. As they run away they try to find other parents who would love them more. Hansel and Gretel face many adventures while finding new parents like cutting off one of their fingers, almost get eaten by a witch, and living in a forest.
This book is sort of a fantasy and dark tale story. It was written by Adam Gidwitz who is an amazing writer. I’m trying to find more of this books but so far I only found one which is called “In a Glass Grimmy” I would really recommend this book if you like to read fantasy. I hope you enjoy my blog post! Thanks for reading!
